La Campera: innovation and respect for the environment in a country home

Reading time: minutes

A renovation project that combines tradition and modernity, with a strong commitment to eco-compatibility.

Standing amidst the plains of Italy’s Veneto region, La Campera is a country home at Cassola, near Vicenza, transformed by architect Dario Scanavacca’s project. The restoration plan has revolutionised the original layout, transferring the living area to what was once the garages and linking this new block to the rest of the building. The result is a radiant, dynamic living space, with a veranda and a kitchen that help to create a very fluid, contemporary interior.

The project’s core theme was the creation of indoor-outdoor continuity, accentuated by large windows to be kept open during the summer. This vision was emphasised by the choice of a multi-size porcelain stoneware floor covering from the Ragno Ceramiche Realstone_PietrAntica collection. The material proved to be the ideal choice for underlining the building’s rural nature, since Realstone_PietrAntica is a contemporary reinterpretation of natural stone in an assortment of warm colors, with uneven edges that evoke the welcoming warmth of the country farmhouses of bygone days. The same collection was also used in the 60×120 cm size to pave the outdoor area, ensuring consistency and continuity of style.
The swimming-pool and a small garden with olive trees and flowers constitute the outdoor living-area and serve as link between the two wings of the building.

The renovation project embraced the entire property complex, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. Under-floor heating and photovoltaic systems were installed, while natural lime-based plasters were used. Porcelain stoneware is ideal for under-floor heating due to its thermal properties. In fact, with its high thermal conductivity this material ensures the uniform distribution of heat across the entire surface of the floor, guaranteeing optimal energy efficiency.

What’s more, porcelain stoneware is resistant to thermal shock and does not warp, retaining its characteristics unchanged over time. This makes it perfect for under-floor heating systems, where a material able to withstand heating and cooling cycles with no reduction in its quality is fundamental. Thermal insulation was also optimised, clearing up the cold bridges and enabling the building’s envelope to breathe.

La Campera is a perfect example of how tradition and innovation can be harmoniously combined in an elegant, sustainable, comfortable home.
