For our spaces, we want styling with a strong character imbued with meaning. We are constantly looking for a distinctive story to be rediscovered and told, in which the material is placed at the centre of the space.
In the new Lucida wall covering collection, an increasingly conscious design interprets a majolica dating back to the ancient Ladino tradition of masonry stoves created with ceramic tiles and distinguishing the main room of the most stately homes in the Italian alpine regions, where the family would gather to spend long winter evenings, telling stories and handcrafting. A symbol of hospitality and family warmth, the masonry stove not only heated the entire room, but also constituted the heart of the home, keeping a sense of cultural identity alive.
Still used to heat mountain homes, stoves are known to be a functional yet decorative architectural element: thanks to the cladding consisting of decorated tiles, each masonry stove is a unique piece custom-made by local artisans. Due to its technical heat storage properties, majolica has been used in this exercise in style since the 16th century, enriched with solid colors and tone-on-tone decorative effects, mostly geometric and three-dimensional, sometimes alternating with traditional natural motifs.
We wanted to start from these glossy volumes and their deep hues to rediscover a local tradition by making it current and suitable for residential use in the bathroom, kitchen and living areas.
The result was Lucida, the Ragno Ceramiche collection with a glossy surface created by applying a shiny glaze on a slightly uneven die, which emphasises the gleam of five bright shades – Ice, Cream, Forest, Ocean and Brick – in the single 30×90 cm size, distinguishing a product with a strong identity.
The 3D Fingers and 3D Roof Structures have slightly uneven, three-dimensional straight or trapezoid geometrical forms, with the natural flow of the glaze emphasising the chiaroscuro contrasts in the various levels of depth and enhance the typical tactile nature of hand-glazed majolica ware.
In the former, rectilinear elements with a slightly concave upper part alternate with narrower lower parts, where the glaze builds up and naturally highlights the darker shade. The high edges are uncovered and appear lighter, emphasizing a three-dimensional structure with a simple but irregular shape. In the second, geometric patterning distinguishes a sequence of shapes in which the natural fall of the glaze emphasizes the light and dark effects of different depth levels.
Both are available in the five basic colors and, since they have no specific installation direction, they create continuity both vertically and horizontally. Installed across the whole wall, alternated with the colored plain tile as a decorative frieze or installed as plinths and boiserie panels, the 3D Fingers and 3D Roof Structures place ceramics in the centre of the architectural design scheme.
Finally, explicitly recalling hand-decorated majolica, the Motif Decor offers a traditionally inspired relief pattern made with Touch technology; it is available in two shades that can be matched with the Cream and Brick plain tiles or the Ice and Ocean plain tiles with cooler colors.
The visual interplay of tone-on-tone/light-dark outlines the contours of graphic effects that materialise on a dense, glossy surface. For this decor, horizontal, full-wall, vertical column or boiserie installation is recommended.
Lucida is an aesthetically versatile series. All subjects in the series are suitable for creative combinations with each other, including with strong color alternations, such as Brick with Forest, or Ocean with Ice. For the choice of flooring, it is also interesting to install Lucida with the woods from the Ragno collections in the catalogue, achieving a more navy look when paired with the Ocean and Ice colors, more elegant with Cream and Brick, and wilder with Forest. Pebbles and ‘ceppi’ create a striking and distinctive contrasting tactile effect, specifically different 60×60 cm shades of Amuri to emphasize tradition and ‘the handmade’. Lucida can be combined with Realstone_Travertino for a simple and sophisticated styling, or with Stratford for a more sophisticated industrial atmosphere.
Lucida is a collection made with over 40% recycled material.
The use of recycled materials at every stage of the production process significantly reduces the use and transport of virgin raw materials, thereby helping to limit the overall environmental impact.
This conscious choice reduces waste production and supports the achievement of LEED® credits in the Materials and Resources category.
