Large Format Tile Installation Methods
Large-format tile (15 inches and larger) requires different preparation and installation than more traditional-sized tiles. Subflooring, tool selection, grout joint sizing, and mortar coverage should be considered before the project begins. Follow these requirements and you’ll decrease the risk of having problems with your tile down the road.
- A level substrate before installation begins ensures tile will look good and last a long time
- Large tiles require 90% mortar contact between the floor and the tile; back buttering helps to ensure good bonding
- Grout joint size for the tile series you select should not vary from recommendations
- Installation instructions from the manufacturer concerning setting materials and tools for proper installation should be referenced before and during installation
- Medium bed mortar is required for tile with dimensional length greater than 15 inches on any side of the tile
